What potters asked for, and what changed

Most of what the Studio does now came from someone using it and saying what was missing. This is a list of those requests and what was done about them, so you can see whether it is worth asking for something yourself. It usually is.

The tool was posted on Reddit, and people tried it, printed things from it, and wrote back. Some of what they found was a bug. Some of it was a feature that should have been there from the start. Here is what changed.

Drape moulds for handles

Asked for: a 3D-printable form to drape a pulled handle over, so it dries to the same curve as the design.

What was built: a new tool type in Handle Tools. It takes the handle curve from your mug design and makes a form at thrown size. You can set how far the ends run past the attachment points, choose a flat top or one shaped to the handle profile, and turn stand feet on or off so it prints without supports. It follows the handle curve exactly, including where it curls back, and warns you if that would make an undercut.

This took a few goes to get right. The first version flattened any part of the handle that curled under. The version there now is swept along the curve the same way the handle on the mug is, so what you draw is what you get.

Round handles by diameter

Asked for: a way to enter a diameter for a round cross-section, because dragging points into a circle is fiddly.

What was built: a diameter field next to the Round button in the Handle Shape editor. Type 14, press Round, and you get a 14 mm circle. If the section is already round, the field shows its current diameter.

The height field wiping the handle

Reported: typing a new mug height reset the handle design.

What was wrong: the code rebuilt the handle from scratch whenever the height changed. It also turned out the profile's middle points were not scaling with height either, which nobody had noticed. Both are fixed. The handle now moves with the mug and keeps its shape.

Deleting points on a trackpad

Reported: long-press to delete a point did not work on a MacBook trackpad.

What was wrong: long-press was a touch gesture, and a trackpad sends mouse events. So it never fired. Now you select a point and press Delete or Backspace, in every editor. While adding that, it came out that Ctrl+Z had never actually been wired up either, despite the undo button saying it was. It works now, along with Ctrl+Y.

"Create a die first"

Reported: exporting the pulling tool gave an error saying to create a die first.

What was wrong: the pulling tool had never built at all. A function was being passed the wrong kind of object and failed silently every time, so there was nothing to export. It is fixed, and the error messages now say what is actually missing instead of a generic line.

Ribs with no thickness

Reported: the rib and mug STL files were flat surfaces, not solids. The handle puller was fine.

What was wrong: the rib and mug exports were going through a server-side generator that had only ever been a placeholder. It made a single strip of triangles. The Handle Tools page exported the real on-screen model, which is why that one worked. All three now export the actual model you see, and the mug body was also rebuilt as one closed solid, since it turned out the old version was not watertight either.

What this means for you

If something does not work, or a feature you expected is not there, it is worth saying so. A short note of what you did and what happened is enough. Most of the list above came from two or three comments.

Common questions

Can the tool make a drape mould for a handle?

Yes. It is under Handle Tools, generated from your handle curve at thrown size, with a choice of flat or profiled top and optional stand feet.

Can I make a round handle by entering a diameter?

Yes. There is a diameter field next to the Round button in the Handle Shape editor.

Does it work on a trackpad?

Yes. Select a point and press Delete or Backspace to remove it. Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Y undo and redo.

How do I report a problem?

Email jordsmide@gmail.com or reply on Reddit. What you did and what happened is all that is needed.
